Calcium is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth, and one of the most important in the human body. It is essential for strong, healthy teeth and bones, and for muscle growth and tone, blood clotting and the assimilation of enzymes. Calcium is an essential nutrient for the healthy development of the growing foetus, infant and child. However, even though calcium is so important to the human body, it is not easily absorbed, and many of our modern-day foods actually inhibit proper assimilation of this vital mineral.

In its homeopathic form, Calcium Carbonate (Calc Carb) is made from the inside of an oyster-shell and its origins tell us much about the psychology of the Calc Carb type. In homeopathy we name a patient by the remedy that most closely fits a person’s picture of emotional and physical shortcomings, failings, weaknesses, limitations and infirmities. Therefore, when we talk about a “Calc Carb” type, we are talking about a person who would most benefit from this remedy.

PERSONALITY (CHILD)

The oyster is one of the more sedentary creatures of the ocean, preferring to stay inside its shell. Similarly, the Calc Carb child is slow, solid and plodding. The Calc Carb type is cautious, and wary of change and of new experiences. He or she is slow to experiment with new foods, slow to make new friends and tends to avoid change, strongly preferring her routine.

The Calc Carb child tends to be very stubborn, although highly sensitive to being teased or criticised. The Calc Carb child is often slow to talk and slow to walk, and doesn’t like to be rushed. Mothers often find themselves hurrying the Calc Carb child along. Concentration is usually very good and this child can sit engrossed in play for long periods. The Calc Carb type may be timid, has many fears, but is an independent child and prefers to play alone. They are also stubborn, inflexible and obstinate (there is always a battle between mom and the toddler!)

PHYSICAL

The Calc Carb child tends towards frequent ear infections, tonsillitis, swollen glands and sore throats. She may be slow to meet developmental milestones. Reflux and digestion disorders are common, such as gluten, wheat and cow?s milk intolerance. The Calc Carb baby often has reflux, as well as cradle cap, eczema, asthma, warts and molluscums.
