What your doctor hasn’t told you about paracetamol

By Eugenie Rowson

Parents run the risk of inducing serious side effects in their children when using Paracetamol (sold under an array of names such as Panado, Panado syrup, Calpol, Tylenol, Zydinol and Tempra). The number and intensity of side effects occurring is heightened when Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) is combined with other drugs such as Brufen (as in Myprodol, Mypaid and Nurofen) and Codeine (Sinutab).

Parents often become so anxious that their child may have a seizure from a high fever that they give excessive amounts of paracetamol and may actually induce a seizure due to the additional side effects of the medicines. The side effects of paracetamol include severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); dark urine; difficulty urinating or inability to urinate; fast or irregular heartbeat; hallucinations; mood or mental changes; pale stools; seizures; severe drowsiness; severe or persistent dizziness, nervousness, lightheadedness, or headache; severe or persistent trouble sleeping; stomach pain; tremor; vision changes; yellowing of skin or eyes.
